Can't see the movie. Anyway...I like your East/West analogy drawn from Jonah, and I'm interested to see what else you've got, as far as layers are concerned. Jonah was an important character, and I think he is too often overlooked. He is one of the few old testament prophets that Jesus actually referred to.
On another note, come check out my blog, appropriately entitled "The Musings of Jonah" - written from Jonah's perspective. I like to think that as he was sitting on the hill waiting for God to destroy Nineveh, he was doing some pretty heavy thinking (and obviously some serious judging too).
